Summary
Overview
Crime Junkie hosts Ashley Flowers and Britt examine the mysterious 1997 disappearance of 20-year-old Gregory Keith Mann Jr. from Wichita Falls, Texas. Keith vanished the night before his fiancée was set to move into their apartment, after telling coworkers he had a secret meeting at 12:15 AM. Despite extensive investigation, his case remains unsolved with few solid leads, though his family continues searching for answers decades later.
Keith Mann's Disappearance on Mother's Day Weekend
On Mother's Day 1997, Keith Mann's family realized he was missing when his fiancée Carrie arrived to move into their apartment and found no sign he'd been home. Keith's parents discovered a red Ford Mustang with dealer tags parked in Keith's old spot at the church next door, with the trunk popped open. The 20-year-old had seemingly vanished without a trace the night before Carrie was scheduled to move in, leaving behind his belongings, upcoming paychecks, and his entire life.
- Keith's dad and stepmom received a call from his fiancée Carrie on Mother's Day asking if they'd seen Keith, as he appeared to be missing
- Carrie was supposed to move into Keith's apartment that day between 12-2 PM, but found his work clothes on the floor and bed appearing unslept in
- Keith's parents found a red Ford Mustang with dealership tags parked in Keith's old spot at the church parking lot next door, with the trunk popped open
- All doors to the Mustang were locked, and the car appeared clean inside with nothing suspicious visible
" Like, those are often the stories that I find myself thinking about in the night when I can't sleep. "
" But the night before she gets there, Keith told his work friends that he had a secret meeting just after midnight. And then he's never seen again. "
The Police Response and Investigation of the Mustang
When Keith's father reported him missing on Monday morning, the responding officer was dismissive, saying the car didn't look like a crime scene and suggesting they give Keith time. The dealership had to send a locksmith to access the vehicle, and when they finally got inside, they found almost nothing except a partially ejected cassette tape. Critically, the driver's seat wasn't pushed forward as it should have been for the 5'7" Keith, suggesting someone taller had been driving.
- A police officer responded dismissively to the missing person report, saying the car didn't look like a crime scene and to give Keith time
- The dealership sent a locksmith to open the car, finding only a rock music cassette tape partially ejected from the player
- The salesman who picked up the car noted he didn't have to move the seat back, which he always had to do after Keith drove because Keith sat closer to the steering wheel
- Nearly every page of the police files obtained through FOIA was fully redacted, making it one of the most extreme redactions the show had encountered
" Well, doesn't look like a crime scene to me. Like Keith's young, just give him some time. You're worrying too early. "
