A snowboarding trip to Whistler in 2000 changed his life when he met his future wife Fiona, leading him to move to Canada in 2002 where he discovered he could start a business despite lacking a work permit.
- Toby was diagnosed with learning disabilities including ADHD and dyslexia, struggled with traditional curriculum that taught solutions without explaining problems
- Left school after 10th grade to join German apprenticeship program, started working as programmer at Siemens subsidiary at age 17

" One of the things about computers is when you tell them what to do, they'll keep doing it and they'll do it forever until you stop. It turns out humans are not like that. "
" I grew up on American media, like everything cool in the world came from the United States. I always sort of figured that's where I want to end up. And then, you know, you arrive there and you figure out, oh, you know what? Canada is America for Europeans. "
Snow Devil: The Snowboard Business That Changed Everything
Unable to work for Canadian companies without a permit, Toby decided to start an online snowboard business called Snow Devil with co-founder Scott Lake. Investing $20,000 each of their savings and working from coffee shops while living with Fiona's parents, they launched in 2004. However, the lack of adequate e-commerce software became a critical bottleneck that would ultimately redirect their entire future.
- Toby and Scott each invested $20,000 Canadian - all their savings - to start Snow Devil snowboard business
- Worked from various coffee shops to keep costs down, living rent-free with Fiona's parents
- Budgeted one week to set up online store but discovered existing software was inadequate for their vision
- First order came from Pennsylvania - a profound moment that changed Toby's identity from builder to entrepreneur
" I think that's what makes you an entrepreneur. Like the first time you sell something or first time someone hires you or when the phone rings or something like this because until then you're just someone who builds something which is already great but like it's that moment. "
" We were absolutely stunned realizing that we haven't figured out how to build online store software yet. "
