The Matamoros Devil Murders (Part 1)

Mark Kilroy was born in Chicago in 1968 and grew up in Santa Fe, Texas as an exemplary young man. He was deeply involved in church, sports, and community activities throughout his youth while maintaining excellent grades. After transferring schools multiple times on a basketball scholarship, he eventually settled at the University of Texas to study medicine, demonstrating his commitment to building a meaningful future.

• Mark was the oldest of two children born to Jim and Helen, raised in Santa Fe, Texas after moving from Chicago
• He was heavily involved in church, community service, baseball, basketball, Boy Scouts, and student government while maintaining good grades
• Mark avoided drinking and drugs throughout high school, waiting until it was legal

In March 1989, Mark and his three high school best friends planned a spring break trip to South Padre Island to celebrate Mark's 21st birthday. This trip held special significance as the friends discussed how it would likely be their last summer together before heading in different directions after college. They established a routine of beach activities and partying, but after a few days decided to venture across the border to Matamoros, Mexico for a change of scenery.

• Mark and friends Bradley Moore, Bill Huddleston, and Brent Martin planned to meet in Santa Fe and travel to South Padre Island for spring break
• The trip coincided with Mark's 21st birthday, making it especially significant since he had waited to drink legally
• South Padre Island was packed with roughly 250,000 students with massive entertainment offerings from beer companies and other sponsors
• After a few days, the routine got old and the group decided to visit Matamoros, Mexico, just over the border
