Olga Kupchik Meets Frank Duncan
In fall 1957, Olga Kupchik, a nursing student who had moved from Vancouver to Santa Barbara, met Frank Duncan at St. Francis Hospital where she worked. Frank's mother Elizabeth had attempted suicide after Frank asked her to move out, taking an overdose that left her in a coma. While visiting his hospitalized mother, Frank met and began dating Olga, his mother's nurse. This relationship immediately displeased Elizabeth, setting up the central conflict of the case.
- Olga was born March 24, 1928 in Manitoba, Canada and was described as pretty, smart, friendly, and a natural caretaker
- Elizabeth Duncan overdosed on sleeping pills after Frank asked for space and wanted her to move out
- Frank had lived with his mother his entire life up to that point and felt her suicide attempt was his fault
- Frank and Olga started dating while Elizabeth was hospitalized, much to Elizabeth's disappointment
