Summary
Overview
In Chapter 6 of Steve Bruce's 'Striker,' the first-team coach engages in shocking levels of violence after infiltrating a nightclub/illegal gambling den, brutally assaulting security guards who confront him. He discovers his striker Jimmy Lawson is a drug user and knife-carrier, making him the prime murder suspect. The chapter culminates with Steve being confronted at gunpoint outside his home by mysterious men in trilby hats.
Brutal Corridor Fight at the Nightclub
Steve Barnes trespasses into a building where he's confronted by two security guards with truncheons. What follows is an extraordinarily violent fight sequence where Barnes beats both men with disturbing intensity, comparing his movements to footballer Darren Huckerby. The assault includes rabbit punches, kicks to the face, and continues even after the men surrender, all captured on CCTV which Barnes acknowledges with a quip.
- Barnes compares dodging a truncheon blow to moves by Darren Huckerby or Ryan Giggs
- He delivers a rabbit punch (blow to base of skull) to a surrendering opponent
- Barnes kicks one man's head with such force he's surprised it doesn't fly down the corridor
- After the assault, he addresses the CCTV: 'Somebody come down here and clean up'
" I kicked out of his face. It was like booting the ball from defence to the touchline. It was a wonder the guy's head didn't fly along the corridor. "
" I readily admit I had no sympathy with either man. They had no cause to attack me in the way they did. They received what was coming to them. "
The Darren Huckerby Moment
The chapter opens with Barnes comparing his dodge of a truncheon blow to moves by Darren Huckerby and Ryan Giggs. The hosts had remembered this as a pure Huckerby reference and express disappointment that Giggs is also mentioned, though they acknowledge this was Huckerby's prime period at the club.
- Barnes drops his shoulder 'just like Darren Huckerby or Ryan Giggs' to avoid a truncheon
- The hosts had remembered this as solely a Huckerby reference over three years
- They note this was indeed Huckerby's pomp at the club
" I dropped my shoulder just like Darren Huckerby or Ryan Giggs as they prepared to pass a defender and avoided the worst of the blow. "
