Summary
Overview
Jeff Schoep, former commander of the National Socialist Movement, shares his 25-year journey from leading America's largest neo-Nazi organization to working with advocacy groups for redemption. The conversation explores how he was recruited as a teenager, built a sophisticated hate movement, and ultimately left after human connections with Daryl Davis, Dia Khan, and strangers in Detroit challenged his deeply held racist beliefs. This isn't about forgiveness—it's about understanding how hatred becomes identity and what it takes to walk away.
The Making of a Leader: From Music to Hate
Jeff grew up in rural Minnesota with German immigrant family members who fought in WWII, but they didn't propagandize him—he sought out Nazi ideology himself around age 16. At 19, he was doxxed on a radio show, destroying his music career and his mother's judicial appointment. Feeling he had no options left, he shaved his head and committed fully to the movement, eventually becoming national leader at just 21 years old.
- Jeff's grandfather and great uncles fought in the German army during WWII, sparking his fascination with that history, though they discouraged his interest
- Around age 16, Jeff obtained and read Mein Kampf and Holocaust revisionism materials on his own
- At 19, radio host Barbara Carlson doxxed Jeff on air, revealing his real name and where his parents worked
- The doxxing destroyed his mother's judicial career—the governor refused to sign off on her judgeship
- After being doxxed, Jeff quit his band, shaved his head, and fully committed to the Nazi movement
- Jeff was appointed national leader of the National Socialist Movement at age 21
" I got this mindset that I was now a part of this cause that was something greater than myself, was something that I was going to be a part of, that I was going to change the world, that I was going to save my country and all these different kind of things. As crazy as it sounds, people that are involved in this, a lot of them feel that it's patriotic, they're doing their duty, so I thought I was going to help save the white race from extermination and all these kind of things. "
" You know it's not something that the mainstream society likes, but you get this mindset amongst yourself... it becomes confirmation bias because once you're in that environment, it's very cult-like. "
Building the Machine: Recruitment and Radicalization
Jeff professionalized the NSM through strategic recruitment methods including leafleting at parking lots, border operations, and targeted messaging around specific grievances. The organization used single-issue appeals to bring people in, then gradually exposed them to the full ideology within a cult-like echo chamber. Violence at demonstrations actually boosted recruitment by providing adrenaline and reinforcing persecution narratives.
- Recruitment involved leafleting parking lots at events with different messages targeting gun rights, family values, or anti-immigration sentiment
- The strategy was to get people in the door on one grievance issue, then surround them with propaganda
- Violence and confrontation at rallies actually increased recruitment by providing excitement and reinforcing the persecution complex
- When rallies had no counter-protesters or violence, morale dropped and people were less likely to return
- Jeff learned to avoid telling new recruits about serious consequences until they were committed and moving into leadership
" Hate is based on fear. And a lot of people don't understand that... It's exploiting that fear. It's breaking that idea wide open and it just keeps stuffing things down in it. So when you tell somebody, you say, there's a reason why you're struggling to feed your family. There's a reason why you have to work two jobs to pay the rent and all this kind of stuff. And then these groups will tie that in and scapegoat Jewish people or black people or all of the above. "
" Get them in the door on that grievance. Then you're going to get them eventually because you're going to just keep piling on the information and surrounding them with that. And again, it goes back to that cult reference. "
