In January 1889, Rudolf appeared outwardly functional, attending operas, hunting extensively, and working on his encyclopedia, but was consumed by hatred for Kaiser Wilhelm II and plagued by apocalyptic visions about Austria's future. On January 13th, he and Mary consummated their relationship, and he appears to have seriously proposed their suicide pact. Despite his inner turmoil, Rudolf maintained public appearances and even attended celebrations for the Kaiser's birthday while secretly planning his death.
