Summary
Overview
This episode follows FBI and MI5 informant David Rupert as he infiltrates the Real IRA after the devastating 1998 Omagh bombing. Rupert successfully transitions from the Continuity IRA to gain a seat on the Real IRA's Army Council, providing intelligence on their London bombing campaign, assassination plots against Tony Blair, and weapons operations. The episode culminates with Rupert's cover being blown by a newspaper article, threatening to end his spy operation just as he's gathered critical intelligence on the terrorist organization's plans.
The Omagh Bombing and Its Aftermath
The episode opens with the catastrophic Omagh bombing on August 15, 1998, where a 500-pound Semtex bomb killed 29 people and injured over 200. The Real IRA and Continuity IRA joint operation went horribly wrong when the bomb was parked in the wrong location, causing police to evacuate crowds directly into the blast zone. The attack became the deadliest single atrocity in Northern Ireland's modern history, prompting David Rupert to flee Ireland temporarily as tensions between Republican factions escalated.
- A 500-pound Semtex bomb was planted in Omagh during the annual carnival, targeting the courthouse but ending up on the main shopping street
- The bomber couldn't park at the courthouse and placed the bomb on main street instead, but failed to immediately notify handlers of the location change
- Police received conflicting warnings about the bomb's location, evacuating crowds toward the actual bomb site rather than away from it
- 29 people were killed and over 200 seriously injured, making it the worst single atrocity in Northern Ireland's modern history
- David Rupert contacts MI5 immediately after seeing the news, worried about blowback from the Provisional IRA
" That fucking Egypt, Seamus. McKevitt is pissed. Says we fucked up the campaign. "
" They'll be killings this time for sure "
Infiltrating the Real IRA Through Mickey Donnelly
After returning to Ireland, Rupert deepens his relationship with Mickey Donnelly, one of the "hooded men" who was tortured by British forces in 1971. Donnelly, disillusioned with the Continuity IRA and beaten by the Provisional IRA for his hardline views, decides to defect to the Real IRA. He invites Rupert to join him, seeing Rupert's American fundraising connections as valuable leverage. This provides Rupert with the perfect opportunity to infiltrate the more dangerous and competent Real IRA organization.
- Mickey Donnelly decides to leave the Continuity IRA and approach Michael McKevitt about joining the Real IRA
- Donnelly invites Rupert to defect with him, arguing that Rupert's American fundraising makes him valuable to the Real IRA
- Donnelly's wife raises suspicions about Rupert constantly collecting receipts, suggesting he might need to give them to somebody
- Donnelly dismisses the suspicion because Rupert has been providing money to the Republican cause for years
" I'm thinking of leaving the continuity RA, Dave. We need real leaders to revive the armed struggle. People who know what they're doing. "
" Don't you think it's odd that Dave, the big time trucking millionaire is always collecting receipts...or maybe he needs to give the receipts to somebody. "
